Life Is Short, Eat The Cake | Melinda Sweetman

Welcome to the CUT to YOU blog today!! Melinda here with you sharing my take on the fun Birthday month mood board!

For a little while I seriously struggled with the (gorgeous!!) mood board.

It is absolutely beautiful and I really do love it but I had chosen the “Life Is Short, Eat the Cake” cut file (and I was USING it no matter what lol) and couldn’t find a single photo to work with that title. So instead (thank you Rachel D!) I decided to create a card! You can find this cut file here in the CTY store.

I have cut the file 4 times using some off cuts from other projects and then cut a 5th time on smooth white cardstock so I could customise! Using my Distess Oxide Ink pads and water I have smooshed the colours onto my mat and then flipped over the white cut and smooshed colour all over it. I did that a few times letting it dry between coats. Then I added a layer of stamping using the darkest shade I had picked out to smoosh with. I LOVE how this turned out!

Before I actually started creating I knew I wanted to create a shaker with this cut file – so fun!! In my Silhouette software I have altered the file slightly to create an internal offset and remove the pieces I didn’t want cut. I have that process in my video which is linked below as it’s a bit hard to explain in writing! You can watch just that part of the process from . I have cut one in acetate and one in smooth white card stock.

I layered up all of my cuts in the following order from top to bottom. Coloured front piece, acetate then my 4 layers cut from scraps. At this point I flipped my cut file over and filled it with tiny gold star sequins. The final layer was the smooth white cardstock offset piece, which I have actually ended up cutting into separate words to stick down as sequins kept jumping out! FYI through trial and error I found that spray adhesive was my “best” option for sticking all the layers together.

Once this was all assembled and dry I just couldn’t bring myself to put this onto a card knowing there was a chance someone might throw it out lol So I decided that I will use this as a title on a layout for MY birthday which happens to also be this month!! In the mean time I created another card, slightly different, so I had a finished project to share with you all!

And you can see the dimension here of all of those layers. The top layer is a patterned paper this time.

Now, this doesn’t at all “match” the mood board HOWEVER the mood board is simply there for inspiration! I was first inspired by the mood board for the birthday/celebration feel, then the colours (my first not card!) and then again the birthday/celebration feel (my actual card!) so please don’t take a look at the mood board and struggle like I did, take a look and be INSPIRED by whatever part of the board jumps out at you!

I really hope that you have enjoyed my share today and that it inspires you to play along for your chance to win a $25 gift voucher so you can buy YOUR current faves! The folder to load up your challenge into is here on the FB CTY HQ page and I cannot wait to see what you come up with!

I’ll be back again later this month with another share and can’t wait to show you what I’ve created! Oh, before I go, REMEMBER we have a month long 20% off store wide (excluding new designs) voucher for everyone just enter HEARTFAMILY as you check out!

Until next time, happy scrapping!
