Hello Cut To You fans! I was so excited when Gwen asked me to guest design this month, I admit I did squeal. I really only started using cut files about 12 months ago, yes I realise I was late to the party but I absolutely love them. I don’t have a cutting machine so I purchase Gwens Custom Cuts. These are carefully wrapped in signature pink tissue and boxed and sent out so quickly I often get my order the next day!. I am excited to say that it’s my birthday this month and my family all chipped in for a machine!
I decided to create a 12×12 layout that features me with my sisters using the ‘Butterfly Silhouette‘ file. I love this ‘selfie’ of us, it has a special place in my heart. It was taken when the family was all together celebrating one of us successfully finishing breast cancer treatment. I have scrapped this photo a few times now and it never gets old.
Here are the steps for creating the layout – I started the layout by backing the cut file with patterned paper.
Then I got to creating my background. My style often leans to being mixed media heavy, I love spray inks and creating watercolour backgrounds. I had initially thought I would go for a soft and monochromatic background but as with most of my layouts it morphed into something quite different. Sometimes it can feel like you have gone too far with your sprays and this one was no exception, when this happens It’s a good idea to keep bringing the cut file over to your layout, it always looks different. Another tip, I always use Gesso on my mixed media layouts it allows time to wipe things up and it helps the water and ink to spread without soaking into the cardstock.
I mixed a few green and blue sprays to create the aqua green colour which was my original monochromatic idea. I then decided that I wanted more colour so added coral, gold and a darker blue that took into consideration some of the patterned pater having a dark blue tinge.
Once everything was dry I popped the cut file up on the page with craft foam for dimension and started on the embellishing with lots of flowers and butterflies.
I love how this turned out.
Thanks so much for stopping by today. I hope you gained some inspiration, I will be back later in the month for another share (squeal!)
